Often it’s the small things in life, the small pleasures that we get that give us the biggest kicks the greatest pleasure. Think about in some detail and we realize that our most expensive acquisition or the amount of money spent on anything – is not really the biggest kicks in life. It is, in retrospection, the small things in life that give us the greatest joy.
Â
It is the small holidays that we have had with the least of conveniences and luxury that perhaps remains with us rather than that last trip to Disneyland, and it is the smallest but most thoughtful gift that someone gave us for our birthday that we remember most than the most elaborate flower arrangement that we may have received.
Â
Indeed, it is the small things in life that most times give us the greatest joys.
Â
But the question this morning is simply – How much time do we actually spend on either doing the little things that give us the most joy, how much time do we actually spend on giving others the little joys that they might get? And how much time do we spend on delving of the small things that give so much pleasure? Don’t we instead spend an awful lot of time pursuing those things that do not give us the most pleasure but usually land’s us with a lot of stress and ailments?
Â
Aren’t we truly a funny people? In that we most times deliberately chase those things that cause us not the highest happiness?
Â
This is the time to understand that Life is always Kind and gives us the best hints to what we must pursue. Those messages and hints, those little nuggets that offer us introspection into our deepest selves do not always come wrapped in bright wrappings. It takes our deepest attention, it takes our deepest thought and it takes our best intuition to grasp it.
Â
When we are realized of the things that give us the greatest joys we must spend more time on creating them. Life opens us with the rewards that it has kept for us in lavish volumes and we are bathed in a richness that is much more than just an ordinary King’s Ransom. At that point of discovering that the greatest riches also lies in the small things that give us the most pleasure, we open our gateway into the Blessings of the Eternal One who has provided for us in ample volumes but which we fail to discover, even if Death were at our doorstep just a moment away.
Â
Indeed it is a matter of our life and death to strive and to delve upon those small things bright and beautiful – which really are our greatest joys and let us see – if Life is really worth living for simply by measuring the joys that these small things bring us.
Â
We’d be perpetually blind should we not see what lies within us. Instead we’d like to be known as farsighted and clever when we continuously strain hard to acquire yonder nothingness, as if those were the very essence of our lives.
Â
Let’s touch upon those Small, Bright Beautiful Gifts, especially this Holiday Season, and unravel them.Â
